30 Lessons I Learned by 30

30 Lessons I Learned by 30

I turned 30 years old this year and honestly couldn’t be more grateful. But, it felt like my 30th kind of crept up on me, so much happened leading up to this birthday that I honestly didn’t have time to really think about it, also it felt like I’d already received my best gifts  – my husband and son.

Apart from the feel good stuff, there’s something about turning 30 that makes you look back on your 20s and wonder if you’ve done enough – worked hard enough, studied, traveled, etc. – I won’t lie there’s a sliver of urgency that comes with it. But that then gets trumped by the sense of self that comes with this glorious milestone. I know what I like, I’m more intuitive, I’m calmer and more confident in who I am. I’ve definitely felt more secure this year, consistently, in my career, love life and family life than I had in my 20s…

So I thought I’d share some of the lessons I’ve learned over the past 10 years and what I know for sure about… life in general.

  1. God can dream a bigger dream for you than you can dream for yourself.
  2. Marry someone you really love, but also genuinely like. It makes the tough times that much easier.
  3. Passionate love-making is important for your health and sanity.
  4. You don’t need everyone to like you. Not everyone will. Don’t cry about it.
  5. The grass is greener where you water it.
  6. Motherhood turns your world upside down and is hands-down the most amazing experience.
  7. Don’t ever apologise for who you are. Your quirks, flaws and strengths.
  8. Trust your gut. Your intuition is your wisest and most trusted compass.
  9. Not every friendship is worth holding on to.
  10. Everybody has a story, don’t be so hard on people.
  11. Finding your passion is important. You were not born to pay bills and die.
  12. Health is wealth – mental, spiritual and physical health. Detox often.
  13. Crash diets do work but with short-lived results. Clean eating should be a lifestyle.
  14. Love your body today.  Yes you still have your stomach flatten, muscle to gain, or your legs to tone – love your body anyway.
  15. Sweat daily. Find your type of workout and get going.
  16. Give back to a cause close to your heart.
  17. Invest in yourself – your education, your career or starting a business.
  18. Stay true to your word. When you can’t make an appointment, let the host know.
  19. Surround yourself with people who actually care for you. You’ll know who they are – care for them in return.
  20. Don’t spend too much time mourning bad decisions, do better next time.
  21. Respect and show your parents love.
  22. Wash your make-up off every night.
  23. Be single, live alone – get to know who you are as a young, growing woman.
  24. Don’t waste your time project-managing and chasing a man. Look for ambition and a love for God.
  25. Apologise when you’re wrong. It saves everyone so much time and stress.
  26. Get to know your family history. There’s a deep sense of pride and identity in knowing where you come from.
  27. Polish up on your culinary skills. I’m still working on this.
  28. Start traveling early, even locally, to a different province. As your pockets grow deeper and wider, see Africa and the world.
  29. Build good credit. Learn how to budget and stay out of debt.
  30. And lastly, don’t worry so much, God’s got it all under control. Give thanks.
